Getting started on the dog portrait
My latest project is to paint a large mountain dog portrait and I’ve never created one before! For the final painting, which will be a large canvas I’ve decided to have a practice run on a smaller stretched canvas of about 10 x 12 inches. I don’t intend to paint directly from a photograph in the final work but because this one is quite complex I’ve decided to approach this differently.
My first step was to take a photograph and sketch out the main outline and features. The sketch was drawn in pencil directly onto the gesso-primed canvas.
My next step will be to paint in the layers for the background and the base layers for the dog itself. More updates to follow as I progress with this one. Do let me know what you think.
